The choice of a saddle is a very personal one. Reputed bicycle
shops, as a marketing strategy, and to promote goodwill, allow
serious cyclists to try out the different bicycle saddles, before
they decide on which one would suit them.
Many times bicycles come fitted with saddles that are not
comfortable, though they may look comfortable. Good bicycle shops
will allow you to change the saddle and get one of your choice
fitted to the bicycle you eventually buy. A good quality
comfortable saddle is not inexpensive, but then comfort does come
at a price.
The one material that has had the greatest influence on bicycle
design in the last 25 years is the use of gel. Gel is a viscous
material and a gel saddle has this gel inserted between the molded
plastic base and the covering material. This covering material is
usually made of lycra, leatherette (vinyl) or leather.
The gel being viscous will mould itself to the shape that is
pressed against it. It therefore acts as a cushion, making it
comfortable for the rider to ride on any terrain. Another kind of
gel saddle that is available has an anatomic cutout in the center.
The shape of this gel saddle is perfect, and the gel being viscous,
flows in a manner that does not allow the rider to feel the bumps
or any vibrations from a rough road surface.
The gel saddle should be long enough for the rider to move around.
It is not possible for the rider to sit in one position all the
time, especially if he/she is going on a long bicycle trip. The
sides, too, of the gel saddle need to be cut away so that there is
free movement of the thigh and legs. There is also enough support
for you in case you need to push hard on the pedals. The final test
is whether the rider is comfortable on this gel saddle.
